Description

Coastal Engineering Basics

This Live Course will be offered via Zoom.

Wednesday October 14th from 9am – 12pm Eastern

Course Information:

This introductory course presents the fundamental concepts of coastal engineering and their application to the planning, design, and management of coastal systems. Participants will gain an understanding of waves, tides, storm surge, sea level change, sediment transport, and shoreline evolution, as well as the engineering approaches used to address flooding, erosion, navigation, and coastal resilience.

Topics include beach nourishment, dunes, and coastal structures, with an emphasis on practical
applications and informed decision-making for beaches, harbors, ports, and coastal communities.

This course emphasizes conceptual understanding rather than computations, making it accessible to learners without an engineering or advanced mathematics background – so no equations! Real-world examples and case studies will illustrate how coastal engineering principles are applied in practice.

Course Instructor – Beth Sciaudone & Greg Williams

Beth Sciaudone is a coastal engineer with more than 20 years of experience in coastal engineering, resilience, and adaptation. Her expertise includes beach nourishment, shoreline stabilization, sediment management, and coastal resilience planning. Beth has led a wide range of coastal projects and research initiatives focused on coastal processes, infrastructure resilience, and practical solutions for coastal communities.

Greg Williams is a senior coastal engineer with more than 30 years of experience in coastal engineering, beach nourishment, dredging, and coastal infrastructure. He previously served as Chief of the Engineering Branch and Dam Safety Officer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District and currently teaches Coastal Engineering at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
