CZF launches the Orville Magoon Academia Award

Fort Myers, FL – The Coastal Zone Foundation (CZF) is pleased to announce the creation of the CZF Orville Magoon Academia Award, as a way to cultivate early-career academics by
sponsoring their attendance at the American Shore & Beach Preservation Association’s
(ASBPA) annual National Coastal Conference Orville Magoon was one of the pioneers of the coastal engineering and coastal management field who, among his many accomplishments, founded the CZF and helped to organize the Coastal Zone Management conferences. He also served as president of the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA) for 11 years.

The CZF Orville Magoon Academia Award seeks to cultivate early-career academics by
sponsoring their attendance at ASBPA’s National Coastal Conference. The award is focused on early-career academics in coastal fields, such as engineering, geology, biology, and other related disciplines. The award will reimburse expenses such as travel, lodging, expenses, and conference registration up to a cost of $2,500.

Applicants shall submit the following:

  • Brief Statement of award interest.
  • Brief description of research interest.
  • Syllabus of course being taught (if applicable).
  • Abstract submitted to the ASBPA National Coastal Conference.
  • Statement of interest to present a CZF Certified Coastal PractitionerTM (CCP)
    short course.

The Selection Committee will consider the following:

  • Acceptance of the applicant’s abstract by ASBPA for an oral presentation.
  • Career stage of applicant (with those earlier in their career given preference).
  • Number of students taught during previous academic year.
  • Number of students that accompany the applicant to the conference.
  • Ability to increase exposure of CZF and ASBPA.
  • Willingness to develop and present a CCP short course.
  • Having previously taken a CCP short course (current CCP preferred).
  • Personal interview (if requested).

An applicant will only be eligible to win this award once. Specific submission requirements will be announced in conjunction with the initial Call for Abstracts for the ASBPA National Coastal Conference, and the application is due the same date as the abstracts deadline for the ASBPA conference.
